Lyall Edgerton was born on October 20, 1946 in Souris Hospital. His parents were Clifford and Evelyn Edgerton. He is survived by his sister Leona Perkin (Brian); his nephews Darryl (Tanya), Scott (Meagan); and his favourite great nephews and nieces, Foster, Nyah, Liam and Ivy.
He attended Botany school until 1960 and finished his education at the Souris Collegiate. He started farming with his father and in 1967 bought his start into registered Black Angus cattle, calling his heard Botany Angus.
Lyall was a 4-H leader for 13 years. In 1980 Lyall bought land from Tharratt brothers 23-8-22 northwest of Souris. His parents sold their farm and moved with him. In 1987 Lyall received the Premier Breeder Award for purebred cattle in Manitoba. Lyall had 21 enjoyable years of raising his cattle, and in the fall of 2001, he sold his entire herd.
Lyall sold his farm in April 2003 just before BSE was discovered in Canada. He built a beautiful home in Souris. He kept busy driving a combine for 20 years for the nephews and going on road trips on his new motorcycle.
He worked on the 2005 Canadian Angus meeting in Brandon and worked on the 2009 World Angus Congress in Calgary.
After a lot of struggling with arthritis and breathing issues, he passed on March 10, 2026 in Brandon Hospital. A memorial reception was held at St. Paul’s Auditorium on Tuesday, March 24, 2026 with a private interment in the Souris Glenwood Cemetery.
In memory of Lyall, donations may be made to the Souris Royal Canadian Legion #60 Box 302 Souris, Manitoba R0K 2C0.

Dear Leona and Brian, Darryl and Tanya, Scott and Meagan,
I’m so sorry to learn of your loss.
Lyall, along with Roy Lovatt, was a leader for the Souris 4H Beef Club and I learned alot from him about public speaking, as well as finishing, grooming and showing my steers, and the cuts of beef after market. So long ago, but the lessons stayed with me.
Sincerely from Pam Whitfield

Our sympathy to you Leona and Brian and family. Sending big hugs!
Lyall … so many memories, none of them bad. His laugh, his smile, his jokes, his pranks, his knowledge and advice. He knew so much, and loved sharing what he knew.
I remember visits from Ontario to his farm, breakfasts with his mom (my Aunt Evelyn), and always lots of laughs. Star-gazing, tractor rides, neighbourhood tours. And again later, in Souris, where he had adjusted pretty well to urban living … but he sure missed the farm.
Lyall called me in mid-December, without notice, just a “check-in” conversation. That was a very pleasant surprise, and created another memory for me.
Lyall loved his sister Leona, his brother-in-law Brian, and his nephews Scott and Darryl. He was so very proud of his great-nephews and great-nieces, and what they were achieving in school and in life.
He will be missed and remembered by many. My family (in Ontario and California) join me in this remembrance.
Leona, Brian, Darryl and Tanya, Scott and Meagan and family
