Miller, Evelyn Gail

Evelyn Gail Miller (Baird), aged 67, passed away peacefully with family by her side on November 5, 2023, at Souris Hospital after a short battle with Cancer.

Born in Souris, MB on January 14, 1956, to James (Jim) and May Baird, Evelyn lived in Elgin, MB with her older brother Donald (Don). They both attended school in Elgin before moving onto Hartney Collegiate for high school.

On April 13, 1974, Evelyn married Robert (Bob) Miller. They resided on a farm near Fairfax, MB and had their daughters, Gail on January 4, 1976, and Katherine on October 1, 1978. That fall in 78’, they moved from the farm into the town of Elgin.

Evelyn worked all her life caring for and helping patients as a Health Care Aide.  She worked in health care industry in Souris and Hartney until the age of 52. She was also a proud member of the Elgin Legion 216 and a part of the RICE committee in Elgin. She also looked after the town of Elgin’s Water Treatment Plant for years. Evelyn was considered the “neighbourhood mom” especially when she was baking.

Evelyn enjoyed travelling! She was famous for saying “We are going on a grand adventure!” Herself and Bob enjoyed trips to Florida and Mexico several times, but her “grandest” trip was to New Zealand to see her “Sister by Choice” Carol and her husband Alan. What started out as pen pals, and then Facebook friends, turned into a relationship and bond between Evelyn and Carol that would rival any sister relationship. Carol had made the trip to Canada a few times, but none more special than her surprise visit this past October to see her sister after her diagnosis. This meant the world to Mom and to her family as well.

Friends and family visits were always cherished by Mom. Whether it was going for lunch or just coffee, she always looked forward to seeing everyone. Her grandchildren were at the top of the list though. She loved seeing them and always interested in what the grandkids were doing in school or work. She had a special relationship with her brother Don and his families as well. Anytime she saw him, it put a big smile on her face. Mom always enjoyed a good hug from her family and friends.

Evelyn spent her last 4 years in Hartney. She stated that she loved her place there and enjoyed watching the wildlife from the window. Mom would do lots of crafts and you could probably hear her cheering on her beloved Winnipeg Jets.

Evelyn was predeceased by her parents Jim and May Baird.

She is survived by her daughter Gail (Ryan) grandchildren Dawson and Kaia, Daughter Katherine (Sheldon) grandchildren Madison and Jordis. She is also survived by her brother Don (Rose) and families and Robert Miller along with many close relatives and friends.

A private family ceremony was held at the Elgin Cemetery on November 10, 2023.

A special thank you to Dr. Cram and the nurses and staff at Souris Hospital.

Donations can be made in honour of Mom to Cancer Care Manitoba or to any local animal rescue.
