They were married on June 1, 1942 days before Hank went overseas to serve in World War II; when he returned at the end of the War they took up residence in Souris, where Hank was employed at the School as custodian where he worked until retiring at age 65. Alva worked at the Post Office and in the School lunchroom. Alva loved to knit, was a life member of the Legion Ladies Auxiliary and a long time member of Crescent Rebekah Lodge. Hank loved to do wood work, was a Legion member and member of the Elks Lodge. They both loved to square dance and play cards.
They are survived by daughter Mona (Keith Morran), granddaughter Shannon (Noland Larsen), grandson Drew, great-granddaughter Brielle, sisters Neva Reeve, Wilda (Jim Moore), Hilda Yabolnski and sister-in-law Madelyn Bernaski and numerous nieces and nephews.
A family graveside service was held on May 3, 2014 with long-time friend Rev. Alan Armstrong officiating. Memorial donations can be made to Souris Personal Care Home c/o Prairie Mountain Health Box 10 Souris, Manitoba R0K 2C0. Thank you to Kowalchuk’s Funeral Home and the Souris Legion Ladies Auxiliary; and a special thank you to Alan for his help and support.
Perhaps you sent a lovely card, Or sat quietly in a chair, Perhaps you sent flowers, If so we saw them there, Perhaps you spoke the kindest words, As any friend could say, Perhaps you were not there at all, Just thought of us that day, Whatever you did to console our hearts, We thank you so much whatever the part.
The family of Hank & Alva.
Our thoughts are with you Mona and your family at this time.
We know that your folks are in a better place now Mona but it is always sad when our parents leave us. I will see you next Sat. My love to you all from Souris and the house that Hank built!
We are saddened to hear of Hank’s passing. As you know, Hank and Alva were special friends to us.
Our deepest condolences to you at this sad time.
To Mona,
Very sorry for your loss. Hank and your mother were great neighbours to my grandmother Winnie. Every time we came to Grandma’s, Hank was always out working in the yard and always took the time the talk.
He’ll be missed.
