Budd, Geraldine (Gerry)

Geraldine (Gerry) Elizabeth Budd (née McMunn), passed away peacefully on March 2, 2025, at the Souris Personal Care Home. Gerry was born November 22, 1925, in the RM of St. Andrews, MB, to Pemberton Deacon and Elizabeth McMunn (nee Carter). She was the beloved wife of the late Ken Budd and a devoted mother to Kirk, Frank (Gail), and the late Diane. A cherished grandmother, Kimberlee (Michael) and Alyson will dearly miss her. She is survived by her sister Ida Davis of Wpg and several nieces and nephews. Sister Margaret Fowell and brother John McMunn predeceased her.

Gerry’s early education was in a one room schoolhouse in McMunn, MB and she continued her education by completing one year of high school by correspondence. She embarked on her teaching career in 1941 working in Glen, MB. She attended Normal school in the summer for two years and then got her first teaching job in Boissevain, MB where she met her lifelong friend Muriel Turner and, on her suggestion, she applied for her next teaching job in Carroll. Muriel and Gerry were enduring friends and weekly shopping partners for decades.

It was there that she met Ken, and they married on March 24, 1951. Together, they built a life filled with love and dedication—Ken working the farm while Gerry continued to teach.

Gerry lived a life full of love, kindness, and quiet strength. She was known for her warm heart, unwavering support for her family, and the many friendships she nurtured over the years. Whether sharing stories, offering wisdom, or simply enjoying a cup of coffee with loved ones and close friends, she brought light to those around her. She was a member of the United Church Women’s Auxiliary and Souris Legion Ladies Auxiliary for over 60 years and always offered a helping hand. She was an avid gardener and made the best boiled raisin cookies!

A graveside service was held at the Carroll Cemetery on  Saturday June 14, 2025, a glorious summer sunny day.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Souris Personal Care Home for their compassionate care and special thanks to Kowalchuk’s Funeral Home.

In memory of Gerry, donations may be made to the Souris Health Centre Palliative Care fund c/o Prairie Mountain Health Box 10 Souris, Manitoba R0K 2C0.

Gerry was such a sweet kind woman, always friendly and caring for the people of the community, welcoming new residents, UCW ladies ,how many sandwiches she must have made! Going on her walks, she always had a wave and hello. You will miss this great lady but your memories will bring the smiles back and comfort you. May God Bless and comfort you.

  5. Kirk and Frank
Our sincere condolences to you and your families
I enjoyed many conversations with your mom when she would come to the farm to get her hair done. She had a great sense of humor and I enjoyed her teaching stories. I was surprised to find out that we had the same relative Phyllis Clark my Dads cousin Gary’s wife from Winnipeg. You will have many fond memories and take comfort in knowing she is with your Dad.

  7. I’m picturing mom and Gerry and some of the gals from the coffee “clatch” all being reunited! Kirk, Frank and family – we are so very sorry to hear of Gerry’s passing but I know Ken and Diane would be there waiting with open arms upon her arrival. Oh the many, many memories, the conversations – Gerry was always there when mom or our family needed her. Those Friday shopping sprees they went on – their trips to the library or to a tea being held in Souris, or a funeral or event that the UCW was having to help with – Gerry was always there. How they enjoyed their Friday “outings” to Souris! Gerry was always called upon in the early years to do mom’s “perm” – oh, those were the days and they had their “teaching” days to reminisce about as well. She thoroughly enjoyed her winters out west. Take care and treasure the good ol days and know that we have a lot of special memories that we too shall fondly remember.

  9. Sincere condolences on the loss of Auntie Gerry. She was a wonderful aunt, always welcoming. From as long as I can remember, she was the heart of the Budd family. She was a regular visitor for our grandmother and a hostess for all the Budd family. She was also our knowledge keeper. She loved sharing family history. Hers was a life well lived!
I am honoured to have her in my life.
    Linda and Ken May.
