Young, Maureen Patience

Maureen Patience (Either) Young:

Peacefully on August 19, 2024 Maureen lost her short battle with acute leukemia at the Souris Health Centre at the age of 77 years. She is predeceased by her loving husband Robert (Bob) Young, mother Betty McLean, father Earnest Either, brothers Norman and Peter. She is survived by her daughters Elizabeth (Clayton) and grandson Logan; Roberta (Jayson) granddaughters Gracian and Sydney and grandson Angus; and brother David.

Maureen was born in Port Alberni, B.C. on January 5, 1947. Maureen and Bob fell in love and were married in 1967. Maureen was hard-working bank teller with CIBC in Winnipeg. It is here where she developed her love for numbers and book keeping. Bob’s budding hotel career entailed many moves for the young couple, spending time in Norway House, Selkirk, Winnipeg, Falcon Lake and Saskatoon. In 1982 Maureen and Bob took a leap of faith and purchased the Souris Motor Inn where they would firmly plant their roots. As a young woman moving to Souris, her expectations were far exceeded with a strong, friendly community that accepted her with open arms. It’s here in Souris where Maureen truly thrived. She built strong friendships and participated in many community events. She used her incredible work ethic to build a successful business. Every morning, never fail, she would be the first person to start work in the restaurant. Her face would light up when the regular coffee crew would filter in. This would give her a chance to sit and catch up with current affairs and community happenings. She shared many laughs in her restaurant with many different people. Hard work was in her blood and she proved that by many hours spent on catering events and hosting the infamous Sunday buffet.

Maureen and Bob purchased a modest cabin on Pelican Lake at Cow Point in 1991, This was Maureen’s slice of paradise. It is here that Maureen dedicated many years creating a garden for all her friends and family to enjoy. Gardening was her true passion in life.

Maureen will be forever remembered for her easy-going personality, quick wit and incredible work ethic. A strong force who loved nature, gardening and most of all her friends and family.

Thank you to the Souris Health Centre staff for the incredible care and compassion they showed Maureen and all her loved ones. Special thank you to Dr. Cram for the countless hours spent on Maureen’s health and wellbeing throughout the decades.

A service to celebrate Maureen and Bob’s lives will held in Souris on Thursday, September 5, 2024. In memory of Maureen, donations may be made to the Souris Hospital Palliative Care Fund c/o Prairie Mountain Health Box 10 Souris, Manitoba R0K 2C0.

  2. Maureen was a good soul. I will always remember taking her out to practice driving because Bob was a bit “stressed” with her behind the wheel. She had a kind heart and a wonderful sense of humour. Thinking of you all. Hugs
