Cowan, Kathleen Louise

Kathleen Louise Cowan passed away peacefully in Souris Hospital on November 11, 2022.  Kay was born October 11, 1953 to proud parents, Art and Reta Cowan. Kay was the oldest of 5 siblings; Doug, Debi, Janet and Bill.  She grew up on the farm SW 32-6-22 RM of Cameron.  Kay loved coming home to the farm for all family gatherings. Kay attended school in Hartney, Mb and graduated in 1972.

Kay proudly took part this past summer in helping to organize the Class of ‘72’ 50 year reunion in August 2022.

Following her graduation from HCI, Kay went on to take her nursing training at St. Boniface Hospital School of LPN. Kay graduated from her LPN course in March of 1974.  From there she began her career at Brandon General Hospital, where she enjoyed a 32 year career.

On her time off work Kay enjoyed travelling, going home to the farm for family events, attending baseball and hockey games.  Places she travelled to included South Africa, Alaska, Hawaii, Las Vegas, and a cruise down the Danube River.  Other short trips to Ontario, Minnesota, PEI, and Maine were enjoyed. Kay spent many hours watching her nieces and nephews and their friends playing baseball, hockey and supervising them at the Hartney pool.  Kay loved her family.

Kay retired from her LPN career in 2006 and moved back to Hartney.  She worked casual at the HCHC facility. Kay especially enjoyed being retired in Hartney, enjoying her house and her deck and spending time with friends and family.  She loved to dine out for lunch and suppers with her circle of friends. She always spent lots of time at the rink and the ball diamonds to watch her brothers play, then her nieces and nephews and the last few years her great nieces and nephews. Kay was a proud daughter, loving sister and cousin, but her most beloved title was Aunt Kay.  Graduation, birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, family suppers, hockey and ball games or even the odd horse show, Kay always made time to be present to support her family.

Kay is lovingly remembered by her mother Reta, her 4 siblings:

Doug (Cathy); Kelsey (Andrew), Rhett and Scout; Dane (Laura) Dylan, Rhett and Stran.

Debi (Kelvin) ; Becky (Peter); Trevor (Melanie),  Baily (Ashley), Azelin, Carson, Wes, Mason and Meika; Jodi (Trent) Sophia, Olivia.

Janet (Dale) ; Maire (Ken) Caden; Meagan (Clint), Cole and Cooper; Morgan (Morgan), Sadie and Hunter.

Bill (Nina); Nick (Brigid), Avery, Theo, Millie and Laine; Jenna (Mark), Emery and Finn;

Del (Kelsey) , Wren and Lowe.

A Celebration of Kay’s life was held at the Centennial Centre with a private family interment in the Riverside Cemetery, Hartney, Manitoba. In memory of Kay, donations may be made to the Doctor Recruitment Fund c/o Municipality of Souris-Glenwood Box 518 Souris, Manitoba R0K 2C0 or to the Deloraine CCP Box 447 Deloraine, Manitoba R0M 0M0.
