It is with great sadness I announce the passing of my mom, Bertha Mary Heape, who passed away at the Souris Health Centre on March 10, 2023 at the age of 79 years.
Mom was born to Delbert and Lavinia Russell in Deloraine, Manitoba on July 23, 1943. She lived in Dand until moving to Hartney. Mom spoke fondly of her railroad trips with her parents and her sister Lucy.
Mom was predeceased by her parents, sister. Bertha was also predeceased by her husband Gerald Heape on April 11, 1996. She is survived by myself, her son Ward.
I want to thank the doctors, nurses and staff for the care and compassion given to mom at the hospital.
A graveside funeral service for family and friends was held at the Riverside Cemetery, Hartney, Manitoba on Thursday, September 14, 2023. In memory of Bertha, donations may be made to the Souris Health Centre c/o Prairie Mountain Health Box 10 Souris, Manitoba R0K 2C0.
The Jessie Morden family fondly remember Bertha and Lucy’s visits at our home in Hartney mid 1950’s. Bertha was 9 or 10 when they moved to our area. Mrs Russell was so kind when I delivered the paper to her door, and she also taught me in U. C. Sunday School one year.
My sister Shirley Morden ( and friends Jean & Joan Anderson, Deanna Moreau, Jean Ardagh, etc.) did many walks to the Souris river, rink, cafe, etc. , with Bertha as a teenager. Shirley and Bertha were also in C.G.I.T., Sunday School, Choir, etc. together.
I appreciated Bertha’s smiling face and quiet manner, and always over the later difficult years, wished the very best for her. Our condolences to all of Bertha’s extended family and friends.
