Brown, Shirley Joyce

SHIRLEY JOYCE BROWN   1950-2022
At the Souris Health Centre, August 9, 2022, Shirley Joyce Brown, aged 71 years, passed away peacefully with her family by her side. Shirley was born November 27, 1950 in Brandon Manitoba to parents Nick and Helen Dunetz (nee Gumieny). Nick passed in 1962 and Helen married Matt Sidlar in 1965 and became Shirley’s beloved step father.
Shirley attended Rossburn School and then went on to post secondary studies attending Red River Community College, receiving a diploma in Secretarial Management. She was employed at the University of Manitoba Dafoe Library in Winnipeg. On a weekend back home she met a Vista farm boy who had graduated from Rossburn Collegiate in 1966 without ever having crossed paths with Shirley in school. Phillip (Phil) Brown and Shirley were married on August 14, 1971 and Shirley joined Phil in Souris where he was a teacher. Shirley worked for the Royal Bank in Souris for over 34 years and upon retiring then worked part time at Victoria Park Lodge Assisted Living Centre For Seniors. Phil and Shirley raised two children, Jeffery (Jeff) Glen Brown (1975), and Sherri Leigh Brown (1977).
Shirley was well like by the clients she served at the bank and at the Lodge. She was everyone’s favourite teller, and Lodge resident seniors looked forward to the nights that Shirley would be looking after their needs. She loved gardening and her flower beds were her pride and joy. She was a daily visitor to Salders Greenhouse and could spend a full afternoon looking at the plants and gifts. Shirley enjoyed her back yard, and Phil even got her hooked on watching the Jets. Her true passion was to shop the little gift shops on vacation trips and could even be a tough bidder at auction sales. Phil just loved the treasures she would bring home.

Shirley is survived by her husband Phil, her son Jeff, and her daughter Sherri with partner Mike Gagnon. Shirley has two granddaughters Natasha and Helaina. She is survived by her brothers Bill of Port Alberni BC, Alec of St Catherines, ON and sisters Mary of Winnipeg, Phyllis of Rossburn, and Cecilia of Winnipeg. There are numerous nieces, nephews, and spousal partners that will also morn her loss. Shirley was predeceased by her parents, by brothers Walter and Frank; and her sister Martha.

A private family graveside celebration of life was held at the Souris Glenwood Cemetery, Souris MB on Friday, August 12, 2022.

In lieu of flowers, a charitable donation may be made to the Souris Health Centre c/o Prairie Mountain Health Box 10, Souris, Manitoba R0K 2C0 in support of the outstanding care Shirley always received in aiding her courageous battle for life. A sincere thank you to Dr. Cram and his wonderful staff for their dedicated professionalism to health care.

  16. My Deepest Sympathy Philip and Family, and also to Shirley’s Family
I remember Shirley’s beautiful smile and having a chat with her now and then while in between classes. She always had a nice word to say about everything. I know you will all miss her terribly, but a saying I once heard-“God gave us memories so we could have roses in December” may help you through the rough times. Embrace your wonderful memories to keep your rose forever in bloom.
    Sincerest condolences,
    Pat Pitcher (Moffat)
