Hammond, Eva Jane

Eva Jane Hammond – With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Eva Jane Hammond on Sunday, January 8, 2017.  She passed away at the Brandon Assiniboine Centre at the age of 85 with family by her side. Eva was born on April 1, 1931.  She was the oldest child of Robert (Bob) and Dorothy (Dollie Flannery) Moore, sister of Evelyn (Jack King), Ken (Norma Hedstrom), Wilda (Bing Juckes) and Bill (Gail Reid) Moore.

Eva was predeceased by her beloved husband Jack, parents Bob and Dorothy, sister Evelyn and brother Ken.

Eva was born into a very loving and happy home near Elgin, MB.  At the age of 13, her mother suddenly passed away and left Eva, her father and her four younger siblings heartbroken without their wonderful wife and mother.  Always being a very strong and determined lady, Eva took over the role of mother and as her sister Wilda put it, “She was our mother until she died”.

After finishing school, Eva stayed in Elgin where she worked as a telephone operator.  A few years later she met John Alexander Hammond (Jack), the love of her life.  On November 20, 1954 they were married in Elgin and Eva moved to the Hammond family farm at Westhall, where they raised their two children: Heather (Ernie Braun) and Paul (Ania Dec).  Eva was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She loved spending time with all of her kids and grandchildren: Jason Cassils (Kim), Monica Baldwin (Bryce), Michelle Riddell (Kasey) and Brittani Hammond (Trent) and her 8 great-grandchildren: Rianna, Jadyn, Dylan, Mia, Ashton, Ella, Emma, and Owen.  Eva’s step-grandchildren were Magdalena Dec (Chad), Karolina Daly (Shane), Sean Braun (Brenda), Heather Neufeld (Tim), and Ryan Braun (Martha).  Her step great-grandchildren were: Ethan, Matteus, Silas, Mika, Connor, Nova, Olivia, Kasper and Milo.

Eva was witty, had a great sense of humour and always enjoyed a good laugh.  She was also very creative and had a great sense of style.  She loved decorating, gardening, sewing, and cooking and was good at all of them.

Eva loved her kids, siblings and their families dearly and would do anything for them.  Her face would light up whenever they came to visit and she always loved to listen to their stories.  Eva was happiest when she was surrounded by those whom she loved.  When Eva got together with her family and friends, there were a lot of stories told and always a lot of laughter.  Eva and Jack loved to have friends and family together at their home and they made everyone feel so welcome.

In 1989, Eva and Jack retired to Brandon where they spent many wonderful years together. Then in 2011, Eva moved into Fairview Personal Care Home. When Jack passed away in 2014, mom missed him very much but bravely carried on to spend more time with those she loved. For that time, we are very grateful!

The family would like to say a special thank you to the wonderful caring staff at Fairview Personal Care Home and the Assiniboine Centre Palliative Care Ward.

A Funeral Service was held at Kowalchuk’s Funeral Chapel in Souris on Monday, January 16, 2017. Private interment in the Elgin Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Brandon Palliative Care Fund c/o Brandon Regional Health Centre Foundation, 150 McTavish Avenue East, Brandon, Manitoba, R7A 2B3.

She and Jack always treated Dean and I years ago as if we were family and we always liked a kitchen killer party! One of my fondness memories was enjoying silver broom in Regina and riding home with Clark Eva and Evelyn! So many laughs! She was one special lady .
