Matheson — Elsie Christina Matheson (nee Henderson) of Rideau Park Personal Care Home in Brandon, Manitoba passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 1, 2014 at the age of 80 years, beloved wife of Dave Matheson of Souris, Manitoba. She also leaves to cherish her memory three daughters, Bev (Jay) Hitchen of Medicine Hat, Alberta, Val Matheson of Winnipeg, Manitoba and Cindy Matheson of Belleville, Ontario along with four grandchildren Steve (Amy) Hitchen and Koby Hitchen of Edmonton, Alberta, Breanna (Tomas) Kulczycki, and Brayden Hall of Winnipeg, Manitoba. Elsie is survived by her sister, Alice Zimmerman of Manor, Saskatchewan. age 94 years, and her sister-in-law, Margaret Matheson of Souris, as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Elsie was pre-deceased by her Mother Annie Henderson of Manor, Saskatchewan in 1979, and six siblings Verna, Wilfred, Hazel, Laurence, Audrey, and Johnny.
Elsie was born on the family farm near Manor, Saskatchewan on January 20, 1934, the youngest of eight children. She moved to Brandon, Manitoba at age sixteen. On August 17, 1957, she married the love of her life, David Matheson of Souris, and together spent the next 50 years living in Souris. Even after health reasons dictated that Elsie live in Brandon, and David in Victoria Park Lodge in Souris, in their hearts, they were not separated.
Elsie will be remembered for her caring and compassionate heart, her avid interest in all sports, her sense of humor, and her zest for life. She was a great cook and baker, and when her health allowed, loved nothing more than to cook and entertain, providing hospitality to friends and family. Music and dancing were a passion for Elsie from an early age. Being able to play by ear, the accordion, piano, organ, and harmonica, brought Elsie much joy and solace throughout her life.
Family was always important to Elsie, and she was never as excited as she was when her grandchildren were born. She was so proud of each and every one of them, and loved them each for themselves.
A memorial service in celebration of Elsie’s life was held at Kowalchuk’s Funeral Chapel in Souris with Reverend Mark Murray officiating, on Saturday, November 8, 2014. A time of fellowship and refreshments followed at St. Paul’s United Church auditorium. A private family interment took place at the Souris and Glenwood Cemetery.
The family would like to thank the staff at Rideau Park for their care and kindness to mom in recent years.
In memory of Elsie, donations may be made to the Manitoba Lung Association or to a charity of your choice.
“We love you Mom and will Miss you every day; rest peacefully!”

To the Family:
I was Elsie’s hairstylist during her stay at Rideau Park. I shall miss our weekly chats and Elsie’s great sense of humour. She never went out the
door without giving me a hug. May she rest in peace.
Sincerely,
Debbie Walker
