Clarkson, Charles Irwin

In Loving Memory of

Charles (Chuck) Clarkson

March 12th 1924 – May 7th 2023

Dad was born in Sardis BC and moved with his parents Charles and Frances and two siblings to a farm outside of Whitewood Saskatchewan where they lived during the Great Depression. At age 15 he left the farm to join the militia eventually joining up with the South Saskatchewan regiment during World War Two. Later in the war he volunteered with the First Canadian Parachute Division, which saw active service in Belgium and Germany, taking part in the Battle of the Bulge and the Rhine Crossing. After the war he returned to his family in Haney BC, and  met and married the love of his life, Edna, in Vancouver.

As the family grew he unexpectedly came home one night to tell Mum that he had joined the Royal Canadian Air Force. There were postings in Alberta and Ontario. A posting to Zweibrucken Germany allowed the family to explore Europe and have many adventures. Upon returning to Canada, he was stationed in Winnipeg and had a memorable day as the Governor General’s driver during the Manitoba Centennial celebrations.

Retiring from the Air Force in 1970, the family returned to BC where he embarked on a new career with the Provincial Government as a stationary engineer. At the time the family were living in Victoria, but a promotion became available in Nelson where he completed his working career in a management role. Dad became involved in the BCGEU where he was well respected and received an honorary life membership. While in Nelson he was involved in many community organizations and activities. The greatest, all consuming responsibility and joy of his life was running the Nelson and Balfour Duplicate Bridge clubs, which he did well into his 90’s. After years of travelling and moving from place to place, Dad was proud to be a Nelsonite! Dad also maintained contact with many friends from being in the military, living across Canada and in Europe and travelling. In later life he travelled across Europe, Australia and New Zealand.

A lifetime Buick devotee, he could be seen driving his 1992 Roadmaster around town and every summer for 40 years he towed a trailer to Manitoba, Victoria and Alberta to visit family.

The Buick was a never-ending point of conversation, given many hours of spit and polish and always with the reminder to “Never slam the doors!”

Dad was modest about his achievements, a voracious reader (which he passed on to many in his family), a very determined personality, stubborn and strong, with a cheeky sense of humour, and was a great tease, often shared with a smile and twinkle in his eyes. He had many stories to tell over his 99 years and he was a great connoisseur of fish and chips and maple walnut ice-cream!

We remember his witty sense of humour which was appreciated by many. He will be remembered by some as the ‘Banjoman’ but more importantly as a soldier and an airman who proudly served his country and loved his Family.

Dad always preferred “long hellos and short goodbyes”.

A real-life hero and our own very special hero.

Survived by children Dawn (Maurice), John (Kim), Penny, Pauline (Scott). Grandchildren: Corey (Lee), Joshua, Jeff (Heather), Matthew (Lara), Erin (Pete), Naomi (Kevin), Leah, Kelly, Shaun, Qwin, and Jessica (Chad). Great-grandchildren: Erica, Mason, Noah, Marcus, Claire, Ella, Evan, Benjamin and Ava

Predeceased by his loving wife Edna, grandson Daniel, and four siblings.

Thank you to the many caregivers and friends who were there for Dad over the last few years.

A gathering of friends and family will be held on a later date. Donations to Our Daily Bread Food Bank or a charity of your choice. click to read more

The family moved to Manitoba in the early thirties and farmed in the Deleau district. She attended school in Deleau where she met her later to be husband Ab Deleau. She had 13 grand children and partners, 26 great grand children and their partners, and 7 great great grandchildren.

Mom and dad retired to Souris in 1979, and spent 20 winters in Arizona where she was dads biggest cheerleader at all his ball games.

They loved their card games especially crib. She would have your points counted before you had your cards laid down.

After dad passed in 2015 mom lived on her own until her last two months when hospitalized. She kept very active and could be seen briskly walking around Souris with her close friend Vi Barclay.
Mom curled for many years and so enjoyed watching curling on TV especially Brad Gushue (Gutchie).

Dodd, Doreen

Davida “Doreen” Dodd was born October 7, 1949 in the old Souris Hospital. She passed away on May 28, 2023 at the Souris Personal Care Home. She was the youngest child of David and Theresa (Prevost) Bianco.  Doreen grew up on the family farm in the Terrance district where she formed a love for animals, baking, gardening, flowers and family.  She attended Millan School and Souris School.  In 1963 Doreen  met her soul mate Allan at the skating rink and spent the rest of her life with him.  Allan and Doreen were married June 15, 1968 at the United Church in Souris.  During their early marriage, they resided at Hayfield Manitoba and it was there that their family began.  Treena was born in 1969, Kim in 1970 and Robin in 1973.

Mom’s first job was a teller at the Royal Bank in Souris.  Once their family started, Mom dedicated her time to being a full time Mom and Wife  Mom and Dad moved to the family Dairy/Grain Farm, Shirelane Ayrshire’s, where they farmed and milked cows with Dad’s parents.  After we started school, Mom once again joined the work force and began her career with Public Health, starting out as a Home Care Worker and shortly after as the Home Care Resource Co-ordinator.  She loved her job and continued with it until her retirement, 30+ years later.  Mom loved caring for people and this was, by all means, the perfect job for her.

Together, Mom and Dad started Yatara Stables Arabians very early in their marriage.  Mom made many show cloths for her family including our stable decorations which won numerous awards.  As a family, we  spent many years showing our Purebred and Partbred Arabian Horses.  When Mom and Dad retired from the show ring, they continued to spent most summer weekends hauling their girls and horses  around to local fairs and Provincial Arabian Show.  Horses were a passion of hers from a very young age.  She volunteered as the Secretary for the Manitoba Arabian Horse Association as well as the show secretary for many of the Provincial Shows for many years.  Together they also started and led the Souris 4-H Pony Club, the Souris Trailblazers.  So many memories were made with our friends which became known as our “Horse Family”.  Mom and Dad purchased a purebred mare from Maple Ridge BC and flew her home as a weanling.  Delli and Mom took the show ring by storm winning almost every show they entered.  The highlight was the year Delli won High Point Senior Purebred Mare, Mom and her had an unbreakable bond.

After retirement Mom was able to enjoy spending more time at home with Dad, her horses and her beloved dogs.  She took up knitting and made something for everyone!

Once the Grandchildren arrived, Mom and Dad put many miles on the vehicles following them around to every school event, sport event or taking them to the park for a play and ice cream.  She absolutely adored each and every one of them.  As they grew up, she loved wresting with them and teasing them, Mom had a great sense of humor and a heart of gold.

In 2015 Mom was diagnosed with Dementia.  She remained at home with the Love of her Life as her caregiver for 6 years.  As her dementia progressed Mom was moved into the Souris Personal Care home where she spent the past 2 years.  Dad was a constant visitor and never left her side.  In the early morning hours of May 28, 2023 the sun set on Mom’s journey in this world.  She left us peacefully,  surrounded by her family and love, so very much love.  We miss her laugh, sense of humor, smiles, hugs and famous back rubs.  Dad misses his beloved wife and we miss our dear Mom.  Her love lives on through memories and through all of us.

Doreen was predeceased by her parents, Dave and Theresa Bianco, an infant brother, her parents in-law Bill and Roberta Dodd, brothers in-law Bob Thomson and Brian Lee and nephew Perry (Susan) Thomson.  Holding her memories and love tight are her beloved husband Allan of 54 years, daughters Treena (Wade) Winters, Kim (Jim) Draper and Robin Dodd.  Her Grandchildren and lights of her life Candace (Cory) Warden, Andrew Draper, Ryan Winters (Ashlyn), Paul Winters and Cory Winters.  And the reasons Mom received the nickname “Baby Hog”, her Great Grandchildren Nash and Nora Warden.  Also surviving are Doreen’s sister Shirley Thomson, brother and sister in-law Doug (Linda) Dodd, numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life was held at the Souris United Church on June 10, 2023 with Tanis Podobni Officiating.  Family Tribute was read by Kim Draper and Candace Warden, Urn Bearers were Andrew Draper and Ryan Winters.  A beautiful Memorial video was created by Cory Winters. Special thank you to Darcie Donogh and Carol Bodin for being the ushers and representing Home Care, Mom loved her job and her co-workers.

On behalf of our family, we thank everyone for attending Mom’s service.  For the calls, food, messages, flowers, and donations in Mom’s name, we thank you.  In lieu of individual thank you notes, a donation has been made to the Souris Personal Care Home Courtyard Fund c/o Prairie Mountain Health Box 10 Souris, Manitoba R0K 2C0.  This was a place Mom loved and was very near and dear to her heart.

Martin, Bernadette (Bernie) Josephine

It is with broken hearts, our family announces the passing of Bernadette (Bernie) Martin at the Souris Personal Care Home on Tuesday, May 2, 2023, at the age of 98.

Bernie was born on the Lobreau Farm in the RM of Cameron on August 20, 1924.  Bernie attended Bede School and told many stories of riding horse and buggy with her 7 sibling to school.  On November 12, 1952, Bernie married John and had a productive farming life together for 59 years, thus celebrating their 100 years farm designation in 1998.  Bernie found great pleasure in preparing home cooked meals while farming was being done.  Rural farm life for Bernie was special, which meant hard work and countless happy memories, raising children, milking cows, raising chickens, having an impressive garden, canning, sewing, picking cactus in the Lauder sandhills and special overnight visits from family.  Bernie’s pastimes included the odd bingo game, word searches, lottery tickets, casino trips, her love of game shows, hummingbirds and bird watching, and card games with friends and neighbors.  She was an avid sports enthusiast and regularly watched her children’s sports, and most recently fell head over heels for Bo Bichette.  Go Jays Go!  She was an avid member of the Catholic Women’s Auxiliary and a pillar in the surrounding community.  More importantly she was a great mother and grandmother.

In 2011, Bernie and John made their home in Souris, where they made many new friends.  Bernie spent the last 9 years in the Souris Personal Care Home, continually following her French traditions of giving out “Beks”.

Bernie was predeceased by her beloved husband John in 2015.  Remaining to forever cherish her memory are her children: Claude (Diane) Martin, Lionel (Bernie) Martin, Val (Darcy) Dunbar and Gail (Travis) Martin.  Grandchildren: Bryce (Megan) Martin, Andrea (Derek) Rothnie, Dillon (Erin) Dunbar, Mylen Dunbar, Riley (Bailey) Feser, Kalli (Tyler) Campbell and Shea Martin; Great-Grandchildren: Asher and Aria Rothnie, Jaxon and Jett Dunbar.  Sisters: Leona Usunier and Rita (Louie) Robert.

The family would like to extend many thanks for the care and compassion given to Bernie by the doctors, staff, and palliative care staff at the Souris Personal Care Home.

Bernie was laid to rest next to her husband in a private graveside service.

In lieu of flowers, kindly consider the Grande Clairiere Cemetery Fund, Box 149, Hartney, MB, R0M 0X0, or to the Souris Hospital Palliative Care Fund, c/o Prairie Mountain Health, Box 10, Souris MB, R0K 2C0.
